Terminal Dues Calculator Kenya
Estimate common amounts that may be payable when employment ends, including unpaid salary, accrued leave, notice pay and redundancy severance.
Calculate your estimated terminal dues
For monthly-paid employees in Kenya. Results are gross estimates before statutory deductions.
How the estimate works
The calculator is designed as a practical starting point for monthly-paid employees. It estimates selected components using the salary and days you enter. It does not determine whether a dismissal or termination was lawful, and it does not add compensation for unfair termination automatically.
Annual leave
Section 28 of the Employment Act provides for at least 21 working days of annual leave with full pay after twelve consecutive months of service. For this calculator, you enter the unused leave days you believe are actually due. The estimate uses a 30-day salary divisor as a practical calculation assumption; a contract, CBA or payroll method may produce a different figure.
Notice and pay in lieu
For employees paid monthly, section 35 provides a 28-day statutory notice baseline unless the contract provides a longer period. Section 36 allows termination without notice upon payment of the remuneration that would have been earned during the required notice period. The calculator therefore lets you change the notice days to match your contract.
Redundancy
Section 40 requires, among other conditions, payment for leave due, not less than one month's notice or wages in lieu, and severance of not less than 15 days' pay for each completed year of service. The calculator automatically counts completed years from the employment dates you enter and uses 15 days per completed year unless you enter a higher contractual or CBA rate.
Service pay
Sections 35(5) and 35(6) deal with service pay and exclude employees who fall within specified pension, provident, gratuity, service-pay, more favourable employer schemes or NSSF coverage. Because entitlement and the applicable rate can require review, this calculator flags the issue instead of automatically adding service pay.
Unfair termination compensation is separate
Section 49 provides remedies for wrongful dismissal or unfair termination, including compensation up to a statutory maximum based on gross monthly salary, but the amount is discretionary and depends on the circumstances and statutory factors. This calculator does not treat that compensation as an automatic terminal due.
Tax and statutory deductions
The result is a gross estimate. KRA treats employment-related cash payments as taxable employment income in many circumstances, while lump-sum and gratuity payments can have specific timing and exemption rules. This calculator therefore does not estimate PAYE or other deductions.
